Ames straw poll: drive by view

I just drove to the gym and back. So why am I writing a diary here about it? Because I drove by the site for today's Ames Straw Poll. Looked like a lot of fun. I think Ron Paul has a pretty good chance of winning. Lots of the campaigns had put up signs near the Iowa State center (and it looked like Mitt Romney had a bunch removed that he had illegally placed along the highway and near the exchange. Heh) But Ron Paul actually hand people standing out there in the 90 waving signs. There were also a lot of "Support the Troops: Bring them home" signs up.

The intensity of support for this guy is impressive  My guess is that if Paul does well it will be because of anti-war independents and democrats voting (which they can do). I was actually thinking of voting myself, I mean people are being bussed all over the state for this and live literally a 15 minute walk away.  But it would actually mean a 15 minute walk because there is no where to park. and it is 90 degrees out. Plus it's not a real election, so if Paul comes in second or third by one vote it's not really going to make that much of a difference. I think some of the campaigns are giving out free food, but I'm trying to lose weight.

Anyway, pretty festive environment out there.  I saw a pack of motorcyclers. (Not hardcore 'bikers' but still) and some kids in black "protect the family"
 t-shirts bicycling around.

Best choice isn't on there. Mike Huckabee

Best choice how? He is a hardcore winger

But reasonably honest about it. And although he's a hardcore winger he's not foaming at the mouth like the rest of them.

While I disagree with him on almost every subject, I would at least feel more secure that he's way less likely to start WWIII then the rest of the candidates.

I'm atheist and somebody who believes that evolution is the most important theory in current day science and strangely I feel the least threatened by him then by any of the other candidates.

Though I'm not an athiest, I do agree. I really like his line about though he's a conservative, he's not angry about it. There was also a great Politico story yesterday in which he outlined how being a pastor has helped qualify him for office. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/080 7/5317.html

I disagree with the guy on the issues, and that's why I'll never vote for him, but there's more to a candidate than just policy, even if policy is (and should be) first and foremost.

Huckabee? (none / 0)

He's the guy who said the government spends money like Edwards in a beauty parlor. He also got a rapist released from prison because he'd been castrated -- and the girl he raped was related to Clinton...

Re: Huckabee? (none / 0)

I could care less about the Edwards dig, all politicians make political cracks at some point or other. And I don't know much about the second point, but first impression is it sounds a bit like Willy Horton.

I agree. I wish this poll included him, just as Dem polls should include Richardson and Biden.

I will not be surprised (none / 0)

if Paul ends up second in this straw poll.  I live in a swing district and see alot of "Ron Paul" signs out.  And one by a Democratic neighbor!!

That would make for some fun political stories! :)

I saw a huge Paul sign in rural NH yesterday, in the White Mountain region.

Re: Ames straw poll: drive by view (none / 0)

Your diary is the same type of anecdotal personal 'polling' through your own ideological prism. Wishful thinking is not reality. To believe Ron Paul will have a large following in IA is just laughable.

This is the same problem ultra liberals and right wingers have to face. Neither faction's opinion is the majoriy, but both believe they are.

the straw poll is not a representative sample (none / 0)

of Iowans, but it does give us some idea of which campaigns are best organized at this stage.

This past week was Ron Paul's second extended visit in Iowa. Most of the other candidates have been here many, many times.

Tommy Thompson practically lived in this state for the first half of the year.

50 well-known social conservatives in Iowa have endorsed Brownback, and he recently completed a massive bus tour of the state.

A former Republican candidate for governor and lt. governor is running Huckabee's campaign.

A right-wing candidate who lost the GOP primary to challenge Harkin in 2002 is running Tancredo's campaign.

If Ron Paul, with no campaign to speak of in Iowa, snuck in to take third at the straw poll, it would be a tremendous upset.

Re: Ames straw poll: drive by view (none / 0)

I believe either Hackabee or Brownback will grab the second spot. Romney will crush the field by an astronimical margin.

say goodbye to Tommy Thompson (none / 0)

I predict he will drop out of the race immediately after the straw poll.
